in praise of fan fiction

You never know who you
will meet on the road ...
If all roads lead to Rome, as the saying goes, then even the two lane, back roads that aren't paved get there too.

So too does fan fiction lead to things.

It leads to more sales for the authors, friendships among the fan fiction writers, a sense of community, and a place for talent to develop and grow.

It isn't really a stretch.

The Wall Street Journal has even published several articles recently about the phenomenon.  There are even several authors who are published by traditional houses who started this way.  Sure, not all of us who have cut our teeth there trying to write Fifty Shades of Grey ... some of us look for a voice, a style, or a creative outlet.

I have a lot of good things to say about fan fiction.  I'm sure glad I found it.

I found the WSJ article very depressing, with its tone of mocking disbelief. I now feel trivial and time wasting--- just think what could be accomplished during those midnight hours when I write/ wrote to amuse myself...and met friends who enjoyed being amused too...Just imagine what I could have done with all those wasted fanfic hours.

What do you suppose the WSJ writer accomplishes between midnight and 4 AM? dare we conjecture? Or does she secrety delve into the alternate lives of Plum and Twilght and...

Actually, I think they are jealous of those of us who want to exercise our imaginations and exorcise things in other's work ... There are those who are afraid to admit that they secretly have a 'thing' for vampires, mercenaries, or even little old grannies who solve crimes while working on their crochet.

We see a basic story and look to see what could be expanded - what other possibilities might exist - characters who could be developed, loved, and maybe even get their own series.

We do it out of love, fun, and enjoyment (of ourselves and others).

IMHO about your stuff?

Really, you have stretched your own mind. You have built worlds, families, relationships. You have developed a skill and appreciated the skills of others - watches some of us grow and others of us falter along the way. You have become a cheerleader and seen the importance of cheerleading to your friends.

You have given me glimpses into lives and lifestyles I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. And you have given me entirely new dynamics to consider.

You do us all proud, babe.
