Marcella was waiting at the front of XYZ xxx iii. She had a stool next to the register and in quiet moments read from various books she had on the shelf so she'd know what exactly she had on offer. More than once after reading a couple of chapters in a book, she'd sent a shipment back to the publishing house. Only books with quality information that were well written were going to be stocked; she figured there was enough flash in the pan available at other metaphysical bookstores. She ran a quality establishment and wanted her reputation to be excellent.
Except for the gigglers she hired from time to time, it was.
Louie followed close at my side. Any car ride was great. Any outing was fabulous. Ah to have the perspective of a dog! He didn't mind the trip to the drive through fast food place either, a plain double cheese burger, his personal favorite, did much to curry his favor.
"Well don't you look like shit?" Marcella asked.
"Thanks, babe," I said. I looked down at the old jeans and the ill fitting fluorescent green t-shirt. "It's laundry day." My better work clothes were still at the dry cleaner and I was debating whether or not to pick them up and wear them for my last week. The last first impression or the first last impression. Something like that.
"So tell Mamma what's going on with this handsome young thing," she said. She leaned down to scratch Louie. He wiggled like a fish on the line. When she stopped, he nudged her hand with his head until she began again.
"He's codependent," I said. "He likes to be with a female at all times. Vic and my dad will do if there's no one else around. He's happiest with someone. Aren't you, sweetie?"
Louie looked at me and pressed his face into Marcella's thigh. He sighed. He conquered another female.
"He loves the dog park."
